Environment
At Curtis, we’ve always been ‘up there’ environmentally,
putting as much thought into how we make our papers as what we put in
them. We pretty much pioneered the production of fully and part-recycled
business papers and are consistently open about how we make paper. In
1993, we were the first in the UK paper industry to publish an environmental
report. Regularly issued since, this report sets out our environmental
targets and provides updates on our progress.
As well as Forest Stewardship Council certified papers which are guaranteed
to come from a responsibly managed source, our eco paper range includes
papers made from fully recycled, totally chlorine free (TCF), elemental
chlorine free (ECF) and annually renewable fibres, such as cotton, all
produced in our ISO 14001 (the International Environmental Management
Standard) mill.
Curtis was the first paper maker in the UK to achieve accreditation
to EMAS, the EU eco management and audit scheme, a step we’ve taken
because we want to, not because we have to, which pretty much sums up
our whole approach to the environment.
All our branded papers are made under neutral sizing conditions and
we recycle process waste, for example, our effluent plant treated waste
is used as a soil conditioner. We also recycle the materials we use,
such as plastics, baling wire and wood from our used pallets. Our waste
water is treated in a purpose-built effluent plant before returning it
to local water courses. It usually goes back cleaner than when it came
out! We’ve spent over £4m in the last ten years to reduce
the environmental impact of our operations.
